Spy preferences and sound effects

When you set various options in Spy, such as zooming in the map or disabling the popups, used to be that it wouldn't remember any of it next time you came back. Fixed that! We store your settings in a cookie so they'll be restored everytime you visit Spy (on the same computer/browser). This is a Clicky-wide setting too, so any site you're looking at or any account you're logged into from the same computer - bam.

We've also added a request we've had more often than we would expect, which is having a sound effect play when a new visitor arrives. This is of course DISABLED by default. This feature will mainly be of interest for lower traffic sites, who don't always have visitors online, but would like to know immediately when someone shows up.

The HTML5 audio element is being for this (yay, no flash needed!), and we have both mp3 and ogg formats so the sound will play in all five major browsers. Of course you will need a browser released within the last couple of years for it to work, but thankfully our userbase is quite good at abandoning old, depressing technology. For example, less than 0.5% of you are still on IE6 - that's way better than average! It's because you are SO AWESOME!!

This is an awesome feature. I just checked my Spy and I found the sound option. Excellent job Clicky!

A visitor is a little much to play a sound. Have you ever thought about a sound when a certain goal is achieved instead?

If I do not see it under spy does that mean I do not have it? or is it somewhere else?

The only sound effect we've ever had requested was for new visitors so that's what we did. Maybe we'll do it for goals too.

If you don't see it just refresh your browser. it should have refreshed automatically when the new javascript went out but maybe yours didn't for some reason.

I'm surprised to find myself enjoying this feature so much. Watching Spy for getclicky.com itself would obviously be overload, but I've had Spy open for our blog for the past few hours and having a 'ding' whenever someone checks out one of the two new posts today, instead of having to actively watch it, is surprisingly satisfying. I thought ya'll were crazy but instead I'm finding myself addicted to this feature *sigh*...

I'd like to be able to assign different sound effects to specific visitors and/or actions/goals. ie, a particular sound for when a competitor is scoping you out.

A good new feature, most certainly helpful for some users - great!

I think that a 'knock knock' sound (like the one the ICQ client used to have for example) would be more suitable for new visitors instead of the chime that is used at present.

And now that you opened this can of worms Sean, indeed it would be helpful to develop this functionality further and offer sound alerts for goals.

have you seen that at any time in the past you changed the code and this affected the current code. There is no more "http" but just //static..... or //in.getclicky.com..
I am not a tech but not sure it works directly like that . Am I wrong ?

P.S. Oh, and local volume adjustment would be nice.
I nearly broke my cup with my teeth and choked on my drink when a visitor DINNNNNNG-ed while while watching a movie at high volume (and forgetting Spy in the background).

Anyone else having trouble hearing this in Chrome? I turned it on and I can hear everything else from my computer, but nothing from Spy.

I cant get the sound effect to work. In Spy it shows New Visitor Sound ON but ive had it on since yesterday and no sound effects, even though I can see the visitor in spy. Ive tried in Safari and Chrome and on both my macs, no sound. All other system sounds work fine.

Nice update, thanks. Check out how Reinvigorate does it with their Snoop application for a solid starting point on differentiating sounds; one for new session, one for new referral, one for pageview by existing session, I think.

The sound feature is actually very good to track the visitors without actually looking at the site.
Just a suggestion can we have a setting where i choose to here sound for every 10th or 50th visitor or something like that so that high traffic websites can use it too.
