Tracking downloads

Are all (internal to site) downloads tracked ?
My download stats seem to be lower than I would expect:
I have a very simple landing page (from a link in a newsletter) with an href text link and a href image link to a pdf file. Depending on browser set-up some visitors will be able to view the pdf within their browser window others will do a "save as". My visits to this page (which exists solely to download the pdf and can only be accessd from the newsletter link) don't tally with the number of downloads (only 50% of visitors download). I've just tested in Safari (where the PDF opens within the browser) and indeed the download isn't detected.
Can someone shed some light on how the download stats operate ?

Hello Nick,

I experienced quite the same. Downloads with Internet Explorer are beeing tracked, those made in Firefox not. It seems like Clicky did not the best job writing javascript code that is fully compatible. I go for further testing this and appreciate more comments of the community on this issue.

The code has gone through lots of testing and it works very well with MSIE, Firefox, and Opera. I do know there are some problems with Safari. Randomly, sometimes it will log a download, and sometimes it won't. There is no rhyme or reason to it. Also, when you tested it yourself, there is a slight lag from when you download to when it will show up in your stats. Unless you were viewing Spy in which case you should have seen it right away.

50% download rate doesn't sound that bad to me though, honestly. It may be slightly higher when taking into account Safari users, but unless you have data that tells you otherwise, I think 50% download rate sounds in tune with what I know about general visitor behavior.

The PDF file is in an Amazon S3 bucket.

I tried a couple of times (at least 5) to download the report myself - and no download stats have been recorded.

Update: I tried with IE and Google Chrome and downloads were tracked.

Not with Firefox.

Are you using adblock with firefox?

i am NOT using adblock and experience the same issue: downloads tracked (using clicky.log) for ie/chrome, but not firefox.
