Why is social media traffic categorized all over the place?

I cannot see any logic how the incoming traffic is categorized for source social media sources.

Twitter and Tumblr traffic can end up to either 'social media', 'links', or 'advertising'.

Reddit traffic is either in 'social media' or 'links'.

Pinterest traffic is either in 'advertising' or 'social media'.
